AL'S HORNS
Saxophone
Gold-plated Selmer Mark VI Alto and a 1935 Selmer Super Alto. Al played Dick Stable mouthpiece with a Bonade ligature. His Ray Hyman neck strap is over forty years old. "I have two gold medal alto sax mouthpieces that I actively used that bought in the early 1930's", and continued to use them his entire career.
Clarinet
Selmer Series 9 clarinet with gold-plated keys. Al uses an O'Brian crystal mouthpiece with a standard ligature. As of late, he preferred a regular rubber mouthpiece. "We all go batty over reeds and mouthpieces" said Al.
Bass Clarinet
1935 Selmer bass clarinet with gold-plated keys. Additional keys have been added, like an articulated G-sharp. Al used an old Penzel Mueller Long Island City mouthpiece that he picked up at Manny's in New York City, "and I'm sorry I didn't buy two more."
Reeds
All Al’s recordings since the 1930’s were done using Van Doren reeds.
